Haveing recently been to Tuscany I have been watching several of the movies filmed there in recent years - nearly all of them star Magggie Smith - often with Dame Judi Dench. If you haven't seen them I recommend
My House in Umbria, Tea with Mussolini and of course Room with a View
The Name of the Rose with Sean Connery was also filmed there as was La Vite e Bella or Life is Beautiful.
I have always been a great fan of Maggie and Judi so these films are a real treat - as was Ladies in Lavendar

Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills was Ramsgate's first lady mayor and her greatest benefactor. She lived in Ramsgate from 1911 until her death in 1932 at her home on the East Cliff. She stayed there throughout the First World War despite the Zeppelin and Gotha raids. This website for promoting women's history in East Kent is dedicated to her.

The Granville Hospital on Ramsgate's Eastcliff - a former sea front hotel this was used until 1917 when the bombing became too heavy so the hospital was transferred to Buxton in Derbyshire. The Candian soldiers were very popular in the town and several married local girls
